Markets in Mindelo: Fish, Produce and the City's Kitchens

How Mindelo's markets work, with every claim sourced: the fish market by the marina and its relocation, the two-level municipal market, and the Praça Estrela street kitchens.

Mindelo eats from its markets, and the markets themselves are in the middle of the biggest change in decades. That makes this a strange moment to write a market guide, and a useful one: if you know what is being rebuilt and where the stalls have moved, the morning still works exactly as it should. Every claim below is sourced, and none of the opening hours quoted online could be verified, so go in the morning, when market cities are at their best.

Mercado de Peixe: the fish market by the marina

The Mercado de Peixe on the waterfront beside the marina is where the port's catch lands: tuna, grouper and swordfish brought in by fishing boats, with the peixeiras cleaning fish on the spot for buyers (Archipelago Choice). The national agency has called it a tourist sight in its own right in coverage of its future (Inforpress, 5 March 2024); for the cooking that follows, see the traditional food guide.

The rebuilding, and where the market stands now

This is the part that changes faster than any map. The fish market is being rehabilitated with World Bank financing, its main facade turned to the sea and its pier improved (Inforpress, 5 March 2024); the rehabilitation contract was signed in March 2026, with an eighteen-month execution timeline announced by the mayor that September (UGPE, 17 March 2026; Inforpress, 11 September 2026). While the works proceed, a resettlement space for the peixeiras has been built at Praça Estrela, announced in February 2026 after a long relocation dispute (Inforpress, 27 February 2026), and the council planned to move the fish sellers there while the work runs its course (Inforpress, 11 September 2026). The wider waterfront is also being requalified after the August 2025 storm, in a signed programme covering the repaving of the centre, the Laginha area and the Avenida Marginal (Inforpress, 28 January 2026). The honest advice: these blocks are physically in transition, so ask on the ground where the day's stalls stand.

Mercado Municipal: the two-level market

The Mercado Municipal, the city's produce market in the centre a block from Rua de Lisboa, runs on two levels: stalls below, and small kitchens above, including the mostly vegetarian Cafe Verde (Archipelago Choice; the building's date and setting in Wikipedia: City center of Mindelo). The then mayor pledged in 2024 to requalify all the markets of Mindelo, with the fish market as the flagship (Inforpress, 28 November 2024), so expect scaffolding to be part of the picture for a while.

Praça Estrela: the street kitchens

Morning at Praça Estrela is a market in its own right: vendors selling mangoes and other fruit around the kiosks that serve cheap local classics all day, cachupa and feijoada among them (Archipelago Choice). The square sits at the southern end of the walking tour, close to the fish market's waterfront, which makes the two an easy pair; with the fish sellers relocating here, the pairing becomes even more literal.

Shopping beyond the food

For shopping streets, the main commercial axis remains Rua de Lisboa (officially Rua Libertadores de África), where the centre's shops cluster (Wikipedia: Mindelo). Craft shopping pairs naturally with the CNAD, the national craft and design centre covered in the museums guide. Once a year the food-market format goes spectacular: the Kavala Fresk Feastival fills the Avenida Marginal with about fifty gastronomic stalls each July (Inforpress, 10 July 2026), and the events calendar carries the date.

Frequently asked questions

What is the main market in Mindelo?

Two, together: the Mercado de Peixe (fish) on the waterfront by the marina, and the two-level Mercado Municipal for produce in the centre, with the Praça Estrela kiosks next door to both.

When are the markets open?

We found no officially published hours for either market, so we do not print any. Mornings are the reliable window everywhere in market culture, and the fishing catch defines the fish market's rhythm.

Can tourists buy at the fish market?

The market is a working market first; the peixeiras clean fish for buyers, and the surrounding kitchens cook what lands. Watching is welcome, buying is possible, and the cafés guide covers the morning table afterwards.
