Cafés and Breakfast in Mindelo: Where the City Starts the Day

The morning circuit of Mindelo, only with sourced places: pastelarias, a café above the market, a guesthouse café, gelato on the pedestrian street and a hotel terrace with the bay at your feet.

Mindelo mornings run on strong coffee and something sweet from a display case. This short guide covers the morning circuit with only the cafés whose existence and character we could source, and it says where the sourcing ends. For what to order with your coffee, the traditional food guide explains cuscuz, pastéis and the cachupa-refogada breakfast habit.

Pastelaria Morabeza: the standard

The default for a Portuguese-style breakfast in the centre is Pastelaria Morabeza, a pastelaria serving croissants, pastel de nata, fresh bread and savoury plates alongside cachupa, described as opening early in the day until the evening (Archipelago Choice). It sits on Avenida Baltasar Lopes da Silva, within walking distance of the central squares.

Cafe Verde: breakfast above the market

Up on the second floor of the 1878 Mercado Municipal, Cafe Verde serves a mostly vegetarian breakfast and lunch menu of salads, tuna burgers and tamarind juice, with coffee from Fogo roasted in house, above the market's produce stalls (Archipelago Choice). Come after a loop of the stalls; the markets guide tells you what you will find below.

Casa Café Mindelo: the guesthouse café

Casa Café Mindelo pairs a café with a small guesthouse at Rua Governador Calheiros 6; its own site publishes the address and contacts (casacafemindelo.com). One honesty note: the site's footer suggests the page has not been updated in years, so treat its details as a starting point and confirm before you plan around it.

Cremositos: ice cream and breakfast on the pedestrian street

On Rua Cristiano Sena Barcelos, the pedestrian street in the middle of town, Cremositos runs as a gelataria and cafetaria: breakfast, ice cream, quick lunches and a coffee-shop counter, per its own public profile, corroborated by traveller listings (TripAdvisor). The pedestrian street is the same one crossed by the city's rainbow crossing, a small landmark in its own right and a stage of the walking tour.

The breakfast with a view

For a slow morning, the Terra Lodge Hotel above the centre serves a breakfast of local products on its terrace: homemade pastries, charcuterie, jams from Santo Antão, and Fogo coffee roasted and ground on site, looking over the bay (terra-lodge.net). Hotel breakfasts at city hotels like the Oásis Porto Grande follow the same pattern; see the where to stay guide.

What we could not verify

We found no official evidence for the many bakery and padaria names that circulate in listings, so none are named here. Opening hours change: confirm by phone or in person, and let the restaurants guide take over at lunch.
