Mindelact — Mindelo's theatre festival

Cape Verde's biggest theatre festival takes over Mindelo every November — mostly free, island-hopping companies, one city on stage.

Mindelo thinks of itself as Cape Verde's cultural capital, and every November it submits evidence: Mindelact, the Festival Internacional de Teatro do Mindelo, the biggest theatre festival in the country. Companies from across the archipelago and abroad take over the city's stages and found spaces for a week — the 32nd edition runs 2–7 November 2026.

What it is

  • A week-long festival each November, run by the Mindelact association, a non-profit that develops and promotes the performing arts year-round.
  • Mostly free — at recent editions roughly nine shows in ten cost nothing.
  • A meeting point for Lusophone Atlantic theatre: Cape Verdean companies premiering work, visiting productions, workshops and residencies — the 2026 edition opens with a show created in an artistic residency.

Going

Shows spread across venues in the city — cultural centres, the Portuguese cultural centre, courtyards and squares — with the programme published in the weeks before opening. Evenings can run to multiple shows; locals hop between them. Ticketing, where it exists at all, is at the door.

The festival pairs well with Mindelo's other big cultural dates: Mindel Summer Jazz in late July and Carnival in February. Current-edition dates go on the events calendar as they are confirmed, and our places directory covers the venues and cultural spaces between shows.
