Mindel Summer Jazz

The jazz festival Mindelo built for itself — late-July nights, free open-air stages, and a challenge the city keeps choosing to keep.

Mindelo's love affair with music is mostly morna and coladeira — but every late July the city makes room for its other accent. Mindel Summer Jazz brings open-air jazz nights to the centre: recent editions have opened on the Marina pier (Pontão da Marina) and filled the little square of the old lycée (the pracinha do Liceu Velho, "Liceu Bedje") that locals treat as the city's outdoor concert hall.

What it is

  • An annual festival that reached its 14th edition in 2026 — running since the early 2010s, in the late-July window.
  • Free or nearly free: the opening night of the 2026 edition was free entry, and recent editions have leaned on public support to keep it that way.
  • A platform for Cape Verdean jazz musicians first — tributes to local masters are a fixture — with Afro-Cuban and Atlantic crossover nights in the mix.

The honest caveat

Recent editions have been shortened — the organization has been public about funding pressures and appeals for support between editions. Check the festival's channels before planning a trip around it, and expect a compact, two-evening programme rather than a week-long affair.

Edition dates land on the events calendar as soon as they are confirmed. If your trip is in August instead, the Baía das Gatas festival is the bigger draw; for the rest of the year, live music in Mindelo never really stops.
