June brings Cape Verde's most traditional festival season: Kolá San Jon, the São João celebrations marked with drums, whistles, traditional song and street processions around 24 June.
Where it happens
Kolá San Jon belongs to the Barlavento (windward) islands, and the biggest, best-known celebration is on Santo Antão: the Porto Novo romaria sets off on the morning of 23 June from the chapel of Ribeira das Patas toward the São João hermitage at Ribeira de Igreja, with drumming and dancing the whole way. São Nicolau and São Vicente keep the tradition too, and the diaspora carried it as far as Portugal, where the Amadora celebration is inventoried as intangible cultural heritage.
The São Vicente festa
Mindelo's own São João is a municipal festa at Ribeira de Julião, a village a short ride from the city. It mixes the religious and the profane: a mass and pilgrimage from Mindelo, then drumming, traditional dance, food stalls and a genuinely popular party. The 2026 edition ran 23–24 June; the municipality publishes the exact days each year.
What to expect
This is a pilgrimage festival (romaria), not a staged show: kids run through everything, and the municipality allots the barracas (food and drink stalls) along the riverbed. Bring sun protection and small notes for the stalls. Transport back to Mindelo thins out late, so agree a taxi or aluguer (shared minibus) fare for the return before dark.
If you want the biggest version of the tradition, plan a day trip (or an overnight) to Santo Antão; the ferry across from Mindelo takes about an hour. The São Vicente edition lands on the events calendar once the municipality confirms dates, alongside the island's other set pieces: São Vicente Day in January, Carnival in February and the Baía das Gatas festival in August.
