New Year's Eve in Mindelo
Fireworks over the bay at midnight, free concerts for nights beforehand — how Mindelo sees the year out on the waterfront.
Mindelo's year ends the way it does most things — with music, outdoors, in company. New Year's Eve (Réveillon) concentrates the city on the waterfront: the midnight fireworks go up over Porto Grande bay, and the long curve of the Avenida Marginal becomes the viewing gallery.
How the night runs
- The fireworks hit at midnight (1 January, 00:00), launched over the bay. Locals stake out the waterfront avenue well before — thousands gather along it.
- The municipality programmes free open-air concerts on the days before. The 2025/26 edition ran five straight nights, 27–31 December, with national headliners on a city-centre stage (Rua de Lisboa was one of the named stages).
- Bars and restaurants around the centre run their own paid parties; the street programme is free.
Practical notes
- Book dinner and accommodation weeks ahead — it is one of the two weekends (with carnival) that fills the city.
- The bay breeze after midnight is real: bring a layer even in December.
- The morning after belongs to the beach — the calm water at Laginha is the local cure for the night before.
The current edition's concert programme is announced by the municipality in December and lands on the events calendar as soon as it is. If you are still around in February, carnival season starts warming up soon after — the island's live music never pauses in between.
