Christmas in Cabo Verde is usually centred on family meals and time together. What visitors should know about 24 and 25 December.

Christmas in Cabo Verde, or Natal, is a time when many families gather at home, prepare a special meal and spend time with relatives. It is not primarily a restaurant-going holiday. Visitors should expect a different atmosphere from Mindelo's big public New Year celebrations. Traditions differ between islands, households and generations; there is no single Christmas menu or schedule followed by everyone. For descriptions of family meals, faith and changing customs, see Fundação Verakis and Expresso das Ilhas.

Christmas Eve: preparing to gather

For families who celebrate, 24 December often means shopping, cooking, visiting relatives and getting ready for the evening meal shared at home. Preparations commonly start in the morning so that everything is ready by night, when the family comes together to eat, exchange gifts and keep each other company. Gift-giving and a decorated Christmas tree are part of the season for many households. Not every family can afford a large celebration, and community and charitable initiatives help children and families during the festive period. Fundação Verakis describes both the traditions and these differences.

Church is important to many Christians. The Catholic Missa do Galo, the midnight Mass that opens 25 December, is a recognised Christmas tradition, although the time and programme depend on the parish. After Mass, many families return home for the late meal and presents. A 2024 Inforpress report on Christmas Mass describes the emphasis on faith and family. Check parish notices directly if you would like to attend a service.

The following report by Cape Verde's national broadcaster, RTC, shows a community in Praia celebrating Christmas with songs of praise, and gives a feel for how the holiday sounds and feels locally.

What do people eat at Christmas in Cabo Verde?

There is no universal national Christmas dinner. Depending on the island, family, budget and personal preferences, holiday meals can include:

  • Cachupa, Cabo Verde's well-known maize-and-bean dish. In earlier accounts it was a particularly important shared Christmas meal.
  • Roast meat or poultry, including turkey, goat or chicken, and sometimes suckling pig, in households that choose them.
  • Codfish dishes, such as bacalhau com natas, prepared for special occasions.
  • Cuscuz, pastéis and festive desserts, with puddings, coconut sweets and cakes varying among families.
  • Drinks for a toast: grogue, ponche or wine are common at the table, with refreshing juices such as hibiscus for those who do not drink alcohol.

These examples come from Fundação Verakis' account of the Christmas Eve meal and oral-history reporting in Expresso das Ilhas. They are examples, not a claim that every table has the same dishes.

Food is part of the larger tradition: sharing a meal and welcoming family or friends matters more than following a restaurant itinerary.

Christmas Day: time for family

On 25 December, relatives may gather again for lunch, often finishing the food left from the night before, visit one another or take children out for a walk. Some people attend religious services; others enjoy a quieter day. Plans vary by age, island, religion and household. Avoid assuming that an advertised Christmas party is representative of how most Cabo Verdeans spend the holiday.

What tourists should expect on 24 and 25 December

Book and verify, rather than assume. Some hotels may offer Christmas meals, but this does not mean the city has a large public restaurant Christmas programme. In December 2025, local reporting documented a Christmas Eve dinner with DJ entertainment at the Foya Branca hotel in São Pedro. That was a specific past offer, not a guarantee for future years.

If staying in Mindelo or elsewhere on São Vicente:

  • Ask your hotel or host about meals and opening times before 24 December.
  • Confirm transport, supermarket hours and tour availability directly with providers.
  • Be respectful if local contacts are spending Christmas privately with family.
  • Check Mindelo Life's places directory and events calendar for currently listed venues and announcements, but remember that a listing is not confirmation of Christmas opening hours.

How is New Year different?

New Year's Eve in Mindelo is far more public-facing. Local reporting documents municipal concerts on Rua de Lisboa, people gathering by the bay and midnight fireworks. That is a different experience from the more family-focused Christmas period. Frequently asked questions

Is Christmas a big restaurant event in Cabo Verde?

Not generally in the same way that a hotel gala or public New Year's Eve party might be. Family meals at home are prominent in descriptions of Cabo Verdean Christmas. Some hotels and restaurants do offer special services, but individual openings must be checked.

Is Christmas celebrated on 24 or 25 December?

Both dates matter. Christmas Eve is associated with preparation and the family meal, while Christmas Day begins with the Missa do Galo for many Catholics and continues with lunch and visits. Practice varies.

What should visitors do on Christmas Day in Mindelo?

Plan for a quieter day, confirm venue hours and make arrangements with your accommodation. A waterfront walk or beach visit may suit the weather, but do not assume services are open without checking.
