Mindelo reorganizes itself for carnival (Karnaval). Schools of samba-style
costume groups rehearse for months, the Avenida Marginal becomes a runway,
and for about a week the city runs on parade time. It is the biggest cultural
event in Cape Verde's calendar, and it is free to watch.

## When it happens

The grand parade falls on **Shrove Tuesday, which moves with Easter** —
17 February in 2026, 9 February in 2027. The celebrations run about a week
around it, and the municipality confirms the dates of each edition as they
approach — check the [events calendar](/events) for the edition we
have dates for.

## The week's rhythm

- **Mandinga days** — the days before the parade, when costumed street
  groups with drums and protest verses take over different neighbourhoods.
  Looser and more local than the main parade; follow the drums.
- **The grand parade** — carnival Tuesday. Floats, feathered costumes and
  the year's Creole queen competition roll down the waterfront avenue.
- **Ash Wednesday** — the city sleeps.

## How to watch it

- Stake out a spot on the **Avenida Marginal** early — the good standing
  places go hours before the first float.
- Bring water and a hat; February afternoons are still Atlantic-bright.
- The nightly music shows around the parade week are ticketed separately
  from the street parades.
- Carnival books up accommodation — reserve Mindelo rooms months ahead.

Carnival is the loudest week, but not the only one: the island's other big
